March Break 2017 at Art Works Art School offers an array of new and exciting programs for children ages 4 to 13 years old. Using a wide variety of materials and techniques, students will explore drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and more. All camps round out the week with an art exhibit at 11:50 am for morning camps and 3:20 pm for afternoon camps. Half and full day programs are available for all ages.

MEDIEVAL TIMES!
4-6 years (AM)

Step back into the past as you explore the folklore of medieval times. Visit King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, learn about Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot while you design, sculpt, and paint your way through the centuries. Build a majestic castle and create a stained-glass window for a Gothic church. Design your own family coat-of-arms and flag. Explore the illuminated manuscripts of the learned monks and make your own decorative books. You’ll experience a world of mystery through a touch of history!.

POP ART: THE ORDINARY TO EXTROARDINARY
6-9 years (AM)
Follow in the footsteps of legendary Pop Art icons like Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat by making perfect silk screen prints and experimenting with a variety of expressive drawing techniques. Build beautifully textured, richly coloured miniature animal sculptures in the style of Jeff Koons, and gorgeous impasto surface paintings using the same techniques as modern master Jasper Johns. Round out this exciting week with an abstract expressionist painting of your own inspired by Jackson Pollack!

FANTASTIC BEASTS!
7-11 years (AM)

A spin off from the hugely popular Harry Potter books created by J. K. Rowling, art projects will focus on mythological creatures, both the real and imagined, which are part of the Harry Potter universe! Create detailed illustrations of Griffins, paintings of Centaurs and sculpt fairy wings out of acetate! Learn about the noble animals that form the foundation of mythological hybrids. To top it up, students in this camp will also produce a highly creative encyclopedia book of many wonderful magical, mixed media beasts full of wonder and awe!

DRAWING AND PAINTING IN HIGH DEFINITION
8-13 years (AM)

Learn about pattern, surface, texture, and space. This camp covers a combination of classic and contemporary techniques with a digital twist! From the fine art of Leonardo da Vinci and Impressionist mastery of Georges Seurat to the contemporary approach of Roy Lichtenstein, Chuck Close and Takashi Murakami, learn how to paint pixelated portraits, draw a morphed creature and create a fantastical landscape. Students will learn about facial proportions, elements of composition, perspective, value and colour. Work with ink, watercolour, acrylic paint, pastel and markers.

THE FACE AND FIGURE, ALL ABOUT YOU!
4-6 years (PM)

This program incorporates a series of multi-step projects with the common theme throughout being “all about you”! Learn about your face and body, size and proportions, features and the individual characteristics that are unique to you. Use basic shapes, line, colour to build form while working with a variety of different mediums and techniques. Projects will include a life-sized mixed media person, 3-D sculptures out of clay, portraits in paint, and plasticine pet pals. Draw and design clothing for your whole family with mixed fabrics! .

DRAW AND PRINT IN COLOUR
6-9 years (PM)

This course will present students with basic techniques to make successful drawings and prints. Working from observation and the imagination with many different subject matters including portraiture, landscape, animals and common objects, we learn how to use colour effectively to create form, space, mood, meaning and expression. Materials used include coloured pencils, conte, charcoal, pastels, markers, pen and ink. Lino and plexiglass printmaking projects will round out the week.

THE ART OF STEAMPUNK!
7-11 years (PM)

The art of Steampunk incorporates the stylings of the 19th century architecture, aesthetic designs from the Victorian age combined with modern technology. Steampunk has been a huge influence on movies and graphic novels. Create a rotating house inspired by Albert Robida or how about prints of futuristic air travel over Paris set in the future. This camp is for fans of science fiction and fantasy of the past and future!

DRAW AND SCULPT THE BODY AND BEYOND
8-13 years (PM)

Explore shading techniques and proportions of the human body in a series of charcoal studies. Then, discover how you can use clay, wire, fabric, masking tape, plaster and paint to construct a figurative sculpture, design a freeform abstract sculpture and create a scale model of a person or pet. Look for inspiration to the iconic artworks of Jean Arp, Giacometti, Picasso, Nevelson and Botero. Students will be encouraged to experiment and give their pieces unique characteristics.

Mix it Up Art Camp!

Formal but fun studio exercises introduce students to techniques in drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking in this mixed media art camp. Both time-honoured and experimental techniques in pencil, charcoal, conte, pastel, pen and ink, acrylic paint, and printmaking will be taught through several step-by-step projects. See regular schedule inside; half day and full day programs are available and full day students will have new projects in the morning and afternoon.

FAMILY SUNDAY: - Kandinsky Zentangles! - March 12, 2017

In this two-layered piece, we will explore the colourful world of Kandinsky using oil pastels underneath sheets of acetate covered in beautiful Zentangle patterns. Finished work can be framed or used for cards or bookmarks.

Time: 2 to 4pm
Fee: $20 per family (or $5 per person)
