Using a variety of paint techniques and approaches, students will consider the expressive power of line, tone, space, texture and colour. Students will learn how to work from a resource image and then transform the initial image into an abstraction. You will explore composition as well as explore composition, colour field and expressionistic techniques to help further their goals towards abstraction.

Working from a variety of subjects, students will learn about the versatile medium of acrylic paint. Composition and rendering skills will be emphasized and color theory will be discussed. Students are encouraged to use color descriptively and expressively and to have fun while creating images from a variety of subject matter.

RegistrationThis is an introduction to the ancient painting technique of egg tempera using the Byzantine style icon as an example. Learn step by step the processes in preparing the wooden plate, gesso, and pigments with yolk solution, gilding, glazing and varnishing.

Create interesting, pleasing and harmonious compositions from still life objects using a classical approach to oil painting. This course is designed for students at all levels. COLOUR & COMPOSITION (Beginner/Intermediate) **CC
This introductory course is a must for the art student working in any medium. The essential elements required in creating an interesting, balanced and harmonious picture will be the focus. Students learn about effective colour use and application through colour theory. The elements of design and formal principles of composition will be covered, such as the use of tone and texture, shapes and colour, light and shadow, foreground, middle ground and background, how to create a focal point and the significance of negative space.

Develop a deeper understanding of form. Explore essential techniques for drawing and sketching from direct observation then apply your skills to the development of a sculpture. Experiment with charcoal, conte, pastels and selfhardening clay to create various 2D and 3D interpretations inspired by nature and the human figure. Demonstrations, thoughtfully designed exercises and a drawing “expedition” to the Royal Ontario Museum provide examples, guidance and support. All materials except admission to the ROM are included.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING (Intermediate/Advanced) *CC
This independent studio course is largely self-directed. This course consists of the student exploring a specific technique and historical time period in art. (For example fresco painting, impressionist landscape, dry point etching, plaster carving). They will come away with several finished pieces as well as an in depth research essay on the technique. Due to the nature of this course, the student can sign up for any of the adult classes listed in the calendar, during any time slot and work on this independently. The instructor will work with them one on one. Before signing up the student should know which medium they are interested in working with to ensure a proper match with the appropriate teacher. Refer to the spreadsheet to pick the time and day that works best for you.

This course is for those students who have taken drawing or painting before and now wish to develop their ideas, style, and techniques more independently. An instructor will be available to assist, guide, and discuss questions relating to any part of the process. Students are encouraged to explore and take risks in their work. Individual (one to one), as well as group critiquing sessions are a very important part of the course.

Learn to capture light, atmosphere and mood by working from direct observation, sketches and photographs. Whether you like weather, pastorals, a starry night or a city scene, learn about colour mixing, perspective, choosing a composition, drawing from a grid, and how to edit a photographic reference. Demonstrations in painting techniques: washes, glazes, impasto, palette knife painting, brick, stone, dry brushing, sponging and scumbling will enable the student to paint a wide variety of ‘scapes. PRINTMAKING(Beginner to Advanced) **EL
RegistrationCreate an array of images working with different printmaking techniques such as: softoleum relief, dry point etching, chin-co-lay, stamping, and silkscreen printing. Collage techniques and adhesives with various materials, will also be covered. Experimentation will be encouraged. Aspects of colour theory and composition will be utilized with each project. The imagery for prints is the responsibility of the students.

WATERCOLOUR (Beginner) **EL
In this step by step approach to colour theory and painting, students will explore the watercolour medium. Building from a series of exercises in colour mixing, brushwork, glazes and washes, and learning dry brush and wet-on-wet technique, students will complete several finished paintings. Working from both the study and photographic reference, subject matter will range from still-life to landscapes to the student’s own choice of imagery. The elements of design and formal principals of composition will also be covered.
